The Good & The Great

“Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great...Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”  ― Jim Collins: Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't. As we head into the holiday season and into a new year, we often find moments of perspective on life. Many of us, myself included, do a mental “year in review” and find ourselves hoping that we can do at least a few things differently in the year ahead. All change is hard, but for me, the hardest and most rewarding shifts are in areas where life is good. At this moment in time, my health is good, my marriage is good, parenting is good, work is good, work-life balance is good…I’d even say that in all these domains, things are very, very good. Will I let “good” be the enemy of great, or will I explore what lies beyond good? What would it look like for health, marriage, parenting, work, and work-life to be beyond my wildest imagination? What are the results you say that you want for yourself? As a leader, what do you want for your company? What do you want for the people who work for you? What do you want in the domain of relationships? Health? Play? Spirituality? What’s the legacy you want to leave behind? In what ways might you be letting good get in the way of great? And once you set your sight on “greatness” in any given domain, how confident are you in your ability to make the changes necessary to step into that greatness? We are so much more than our current reality. This holiday season, my hope is that each of us will feel the pull of greatness in our life.
